Is it possible to use Simple device detection only?

Hello,
My problem is that I am setting up a site for someone who unfortunately is hosting with a company that does not support MySQLi extension. I noticed that in the installation instructions it says: "actually there is a way to install Mobile Joomla! without TeraWURFL, see below", except I do not see where this is explained.

I noticed that there was apparently a setting at one time for User Agent Checking (shown in screen shot on Settings and Configuration page), but I do not have this setting in my recent installation. I also know that there are separate plugings for Mobile - Simple and Mobile-TeraWURFL.

"Mobile - Simple" plugin uses simple heuristics to detect device type. In most cases it's sufficient with one exception: this plugin cannot detect screen size to rescale images.
PS. mysqli is one of default extensions since PHP5, it's quite strange that hosting company disables it.
