Could you send me (denis@mobilejoomla.com) ftp credentials and admin's login/pass for your site (or a test site on the same server where the issue is reproducible)?
Les1at, even if zip works, it would be nice to get to know what server's restriction prevents to unpack tar.gz.
We use tar.gz format because of it is a standard format in *nix and it provides better compression with respect to zip (e.g. MJ1.2.7.tar.gz is 644Kb, and MJ1.2.7.zip is 938Kb, that is 45% larger).

I understand u, but I'm Windows user, it just worked for me (in both cases, WinApache, nixApache)
Could it be, that your tar packer is bad or old, or too new?

Our tar packer is usual tar utility (version 1.23, it is not the latest, but next versions fix some decompressing bugs only), the format is standard "gnu tar":
tar -c -f - --numeric-owner --owner=0 --group=0 * | gzip -9 -
tar -c -f - --numeric-owner --owner=0 --group=0 * | gzip -9 -
I installed this Mobilejoomla version on Joomla 2.5 core on same hosting provider server without problems.
Did unpack tar file and zip files but install gave the same error.
UPDATE! I finaly (after trying many suggestions about this issue arround the internet) switched off Joomla FTP upload in the General settings server tab. Now I was able to update the Mobilejoomla component and an other component which also gave the same error! Still strange, because an other website I manage with also Joomla 1.5.26 on the same hosting provider server (of course different account) that has FTP still enabled, gives no problem at all. Can somebody explain this?
