Server does not allow remote update

I am using Mobile Joomla on all my customers sites. I recently added a new Linux server and have one Joomla 1.7.X site on this server with Mobile Joomla. When I try to perform an update, I get an error message telling me that I must manually update.

My php.ini file has upload_max_file at 50m and Fopen is set "on" for URL uploads. Rebooted Apache just to make sure and I am getting the same error message.

I also have the JCE wysiwyg editor installed and remote updates work fine. In fact, I just performed an update today of JCE.

Does anyone have any ideas concerning why this is not working on this new server? I would hate to have to do manual updates on all site on this new server.

MJ update uses default Joomla's methods to download, unpack and install extension:
JInstallerHelper::downloadPackage - download package to joomla's tmp directory
JInstallerHelper::unpack - unpack package inside tmp directory
JInstaller::install - install unpacked extension

So, check permissions for tmp directory and that allow_url_fopen directive is enabled.

I have rechecked the allow_url_Fopen setting and it is "On" (enabled)

The permission looked just fine but just to make sure I changed the "/tmp" directory to "777" and it still did not work.

Also, I am not using FTP in the Joomla CMS configuration.

Since the JCE update and Joomla Core updates work on this site, I am mystified by why Mobile Joomla update is not working. Are there any Apache plugins that perhaps I have not installed on this new server that might be used by Mobile Joomla in this update . Such as JSON, etc....?

I am having the same problem on a Free BSD server.
The other Linux host servers I am using
do not create any problems with the install. 

If anyone on core team, or otherwise, has a solution
to this, it would be greatly appreciated.
