Background image only displaying blank box with white outline

I am building a mobile site using the elegance template version 1.3.14 and mobile joomla version 1.2.8 and as I was putting in styling within the backend the background image for the site is displaying at a blank box with a white border. I am not sure what is going on and would greatly appreciate some help.
