Hi Robin,
I'm not part of the team but I'll have a go at answering the question.
I looked at the site you gave
www.shikle.com/blogcalendar.htm
downloaded the zip file and then unzipped to reveal two zip files, (component and module)
and then I installed both blog calendar component and blog calendar module using normal joomla install.
The question specifically asked about the component part of the extension but I have added details of how to use the module part in case that helps someone.
I went to Menus > and chose the menu I am using on the mobile browsers
I then clicked on new and in the select menu item type there was one called Blog Calendar
I clicked on that and then clicked on article list by date
I called the Title Blog Calendar
I then clicked on save (the default is show all articles)
I then viewed the site using an iphone emulator (Firefox and user agent switcher)
and clicked on the menu for Blog Calendar and there were the articles with a scroll bar to reach them.
And for Modules...
I went to Extensions > Module Manager then looked for Blog calendar reload
I enabled it,
and set the position to mj_iphone_footer2
and Menu Assignment select Menu Item(s) from the list (yes)
I chose a menu item
and saved
and then viewed the page using an iphone emulator (Firefox and user agent switcher)
and there was the blog calendar...
I have not set any blog parameters as I am not familiar with the extension.
Is that sufficient for you to proceed?
PS I'm sure you know that to get the modules to work on all four mobile templates you use the copy feature in Module Manager to make another 3 copies of the (mod_blog_calendar) and then put each in a position in the mobile template (iphone, pda, imode, wap)
