Using the Joomla 1.7 version. It's great - though I'd love some documentation specific to this version as much has changed.

My main problem, which led me to disable the whole thing, was that it took over my home page even for non-mobile phones (ie: every visitor even from regular computers got the mobile menu). Can someone explain what setting(s) would do this?

Possible reasons:
1. You change setting of Mobile-Always plugin to switch users to non-desktop view.
2. You set "Domain" MJ settings equal to main domain.
3. You have caching proxy server somewhere between your webserver and client computer.

What is URL of your site?

I'm not totally sure what setting it was but here is what I did:

1. Uninstalled the component and all plugins (it would be nice if this also removed the db tables - I had to do that manually and there are a lot of them)

2. Reinstalled

3. Set my CCNewberg Mobile Menu module to display on all pages in the mj_all_middle position

When I reinstalled and went to my home page it showed the iphone menu, but I think that might have been a browser cache issue.

I'd love to do more styling on the menu to make it bigger on the phone (I'm using a Droid).

Mobile Joomla component removes all the mobile plugins, templates, modules, and DB tables in uninstall procedure. It's quite strange that it didn't work in your case.

MobileJoomla saves last used view mode in cookies, so you should visit yoursite.com/?device=desktop to reset it (ot to manually clear cookies in browser settings).
