TOPIC: SEO Friendly?

SEO Friendly? 15 years ago #6

Hi

Looks promising! Mislead me with the 'Download now!' button though, as actually there's nothing to download now, but you still sharked my data!! I don't mind, but someone might take offence to this. Just a thought.

Now my question - I've used the old 'mobile friendly' template from the JED before on a website (I know this isn't anything to do with this product) but it breaks search engine rankings at Google et al, and invalidates RSS feeds due to a feedback loop. My site plummeted out of the rankings. Removed template, boing, back to top of Google again. My guess is the user agent for a Googlebot wasn't recognised as a mobile or desktop browser and failed. WURFL is a PITA too.

So - as I know this is only a preview at the moment can you reassure me that MobileJoomla will not suffer the same fate and remove/drop my sites from Google?

Great effort so far btw.

EDIT: ADMIN - Apologies, don't know how I ended up in Bug Reports!! Pls move to General section thx

Hi John,

Yes, you are right, we wouldn't like to mislead or offend anyone. Modified it little bit, hope this makes things little more clear.

About SEO; we are very sensitive about the subject. We designed MJ to bring a clear added value to your Joomla! site and even boost your site rankings & traffic. At the same time, we are using MJ for MJ's site, and SEO is important for us, at least as much as it would be to anyone else. So no worries In technical terms: For this specific issue you mentioned, we have special check for Googlebots. And if you are not so fond of WURFL, MJ gives you the choice from a rich selection of UA detection.

Hope helps.

That certainly does!! Wow guys I must say this is looking bloody fantastic, and exactly the development that Joomla! Needs to keep it popular moving forward in the age of the mobile device. I for one will be using this all the time.

Yeah the WURFL thing - its great, does what it says on the tin, but there's little chance of every tom dick or harry getting it working on their server - I've only had it working 1/5 servers so far (granted all of them are shared, so its hosting limitations not WURFL itself). However, giving the user the option to not use WURFL is a great idea - at the end of the day it opens your product up to everyone that needs it, no matter what their skill level and/or server price. And as for the SEOness, that makes me well happy.

MJ You have my support for sure - and no doubt I will chuck a donation your way when it comes live, as I will be using this a lot!

All the best on this great project.

That's really great to hear John! The best thing that could happen to MJ is a great & enthusiastic community around; so that we find the strength and encouragement to make things better

About WURFL (and MJ in general): It's dead-simple to set everything up. You won't need to set WURFL or any of a kind separately. Everything works out-of-the box; so Tom, Dick & Harry can use it Check this Installation guide out; you can see it requires only mouse using skills

Wow, thats awesome. It was the 'Update Cache' step that gave me grief, timeouts etc - looks like you've got that covered too! top work. Now following on Twitter too, cheers
